Introduction

In response to the growing competition from TikTok, as everyone knows, Google created a short-form vertical video section on its existing video-sharing platform, YouTube, called Shorts. In most eyes, it is an excellent addition to YouTube, especially for TikTok content creators who are excited to share their content created for TikTok with YouTube users. As an avid TikTok and YouTube Premium user, I wouldn’t say I liked the addition of Shorts. It diminished my YouTube experience and did not create a TikTok-like experience for me at all. Regardless of my feelings, most agree that more than YouTube Shorts is needed to compete with TikTok. With the ongoing controversy over TikTok and its ban, it is an unprecedented time for Google to take action and provide a replacement social media platform to give users and content creators a permanent, safe home. Google’s vast experience and technology related to YouTube and YT Shorts make it best positioned to fulfill this need. YouTube shorts will not be enough to be a suitable or better replacement for Tiktok. A detailed understanding of what makes TikTok unique is required to recreate its success and even surpass it. There are several essential ingredients for TikTok’s success compared to similar social media Apps, its so-called special sauce. Google must replicate that special sauce to win the race to replace TikTok in the long term and create a social media App that users can enjoy and use in the foreseeable future.
